MW-Style-070914-Spark-NW-10

SPARK has moved a couple of blocks away from Royal Hawaiian Avenue to Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki. The popular clothing and vintage collectibles store is known for its original line of graphic T-shirts, caps, hoodies and shorts, as well as retro decor and novelty fashion items from the 1950s through the ’70s.

Store owner Masashi Iwata (pictured above) started the company 18 years ago selling primarily antiques, such as old jukeboxes, classic motorcycles and collectible toys. He also started designing T-shirts and discovered that people really liked his designs, including a loyal following of fans among Japanese visitors and celebrities.

At Royal Hawaiian Center, SPARK is located on the second level of Building A, next to Island Slipper. For more information, visit facebook.com/sparkhawaii or call 781-9165.

Island Yumi

Island Heritage introduces Island Yumi, a Hawaii brand of clothing, stationery, gift items and accessories featuring cute, fun and lovable characters for girls of all ages.

“The characters include six young girls who are all friends living and growing up in Hawaii: Aloha, Mai, Mele, Pua, Hoku and Ono,” explains Lynne Madden, executive vice president of The Madden Corporation, the parent company of Island Heritage. “Each character has her own unique personality, and they all carry a message of aloha for others, self-acceptance and the joy which makes childhood magical.”

The inspiration for the concept of Island Yumi is credited to president and CEO Dale Madden, who wanted to capture the many special things about Hawaii in a fresh and unique way. Their team of talented artists and designers then brought the adorable characters to life, illustrating them in a whimsical manner inspired by Japanese animation.

“We actually thought about our own daughters and what it was like for them growing up here,” adds Lynne. “And we came up with Island Yumi as a fun and playful way to capture that joy.”

New Island Yumi plush dolls will be arriving in stores within the next few weeks, and Madden says they are continuously developing new products and more items, including a coloring and activity book, as well as a story-book.

Island Yumi is available at more than 50 locations, including hotel gift shops throughout the state, California and Japan, and online at islandyumi.com. On Oahu, Island Yumi clothing and gift items can be found at The Islands’ Best, Marine Corps and Navy Exchanges, Hilo Hattie (Nimitz and Ala Moana), Little People Hawaii, Pineapples Boutique, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa at Ko Olina, Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club, Dole Plantation and Polynesian Cultural Center.

Island Yumi gift items also can be found in stores throughout Hawaii that carry Island Heritage, including Longs Drugs, Walmart, Kmart, Walgreens, Don Quijote, Sears, Target, Army Exchanges, Honolulu International Airport gift shops and ABC Stores. For more information, visit islandyumi.com or call 564-8853.

Located at 1236 Waimanu St. (near Ala Moana Center, across from Kissaten), Middi Honolulu is an expansion of its original store in Hiroo, Tokyo, which has been in business for nine years.

“We always thought if we could live in a paradise someday, then we said, ‘why not now?’” says owner Mami Koizumi, who was born and raised in Tokyo. “Our boutique is for the adult with a luxe but casual island style. Such as for vacationists, we want them to stop by on the first day of their trip and find their wardrobe for their vacation in Hawaii.”

Some of the brands you’ll find are LNA, Velvet, Sundry, Sol Angeles, Tigerlily, Matt Bernson Kayu, Current/Elliott, Monrow and more. Featured entertainers are from some of Hawaii’s most esteemed organizations, including Halau Hula Olana, Terry Brown Ukulele Studio, Halau Hula O Mokulele and Ke Kula Mele Hawaii. A highlight will be an appearance by the Aloha Festivals Royal Court at 10 a.m. Bring the keiki to make ti leaf lei and enjoy other fun, child-friendly activities. Wear your Aloha Festivals’ ribbon or power band and receive discounts from participating Pearlridge merchants.

Lani Lau Hawaii

When Michelle Smith traveled to Bali more than 25 years ago, she found herself inspired by Balinese culture and developed a love affair with the exotic Indonesian island. So when she started her clothing line Lani Lau, she decided to merge her love of Bali with new inspiration that comes from living in Hawaii and the beauty she’s surrounded by daily.

“My latest collection is called Rain and is inspired by the gorgeous sunsets Hawaii is famous for,” she explains. “Lani Lau is boho chic with a tropical feel. We have maxi dresses, shorts, tops and tunics.”

Smith moved from Canada to Maui 12 years ago, and worked as a Realtor. She then moved to Oahu five years ago and opened a furniture and home decor store called Bali Designs on Sand Island. But she missed the fashion industry, in which she worked in Canada, and started Lani Lau two years ago.

“The line has gained a lot of press from some famous models from Japan recently wearing our line, so our following with the Japanese has been really remarkable,” she says. “We also are excited to have Anuhea, the local singer, wearing our clothing, and so with all the social media buzz that has been created, the line continues to grow in popularity.”

Smith has opened a boutique within Bali Designs at 2144 Auiki St., transforming it to more of a lifestyle store. On Oahu, you also can find Lani Lau at various boutiques in Waikiki, Gypsea in Kailua, Lilikoi in Kahala Mall and more. For a full list of stores that carry Lani Lau, visit lanilauhawaii.com.
