After being crowned Mrs. Hawaii in 2003, Cheryl Morales says, she developed an eye for bling. She started by adding rhinestones to her own wardrobe, but soon others noticed and wanted some sparkle too. So she decided to turn her hobby into a small business, and four-and-a-half years ago launched Bling it on Personally, a webstore that creates customized/personalized rhinestone motifs that can be applied to most fabric garments. “I’m super excited to sparkle every infant, toddler, girl and woman with my designs,” says Morales, who also works as president of mechanical insulation company American Industrial Inc. “I believe ‘you’ deserve to sparkle. This is what my vision has been and will continue to be.”

For the first time, Morales brings Bling it on Personally to the upcoming Oh Baby! Family Expo Oct. 11 and 12 at Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. The expo will have more than 150 vendors catering to families with newborns and children up to 12 years old. Shop the latest fashion

trends, find ideas for your baby’s first birthday party, get information on schools and local play centers, learn how to child-proof your home, take part in a Stroller Strides/Stroller Barre workout and more. There also will be a Baby Crawling Contest, an appearance by Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, a magic show by Mark Mauricio, a keiki fashion show, a junior chef class by Williams-Sonoma, an etiquette class, an Ohana Music Together class and much more.

The Oh Baby! Family Expo also encompasses Hawaii’s Toy & Game Expo, featuring some of the hottest toys and games today, including a Flower Sticks demonstration, Pokemon card gaming and tournament, kendama tournament, Diablo/Chinese yo-yo demonstration, Jitter Ring demonstration, yo-yo demonstration and giveaway, Attacknids Battle Arena and family boardgame area.

The expo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is $5.50, free for children age 5 and under. For more information, including event schedule, visit ohbabyfamilyexpo.com.

The Hui Makaala 45th annual scholarship fund luncheon and fashion show takes place Oct. 19 in Pomaikai Ballrooms at Dole Cannery, featuring the latest fashions from Calista by Cotton Cargo, Nui Mono and Rix Island Wear.

Located in Kahala Mall and downtown (76 N. King St.), Calista celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The boutique carries women’s fashions and accessories for every occasion, from casual to formal, including for proms, weddings and everyday wear. Owner Gilda Minassian brings in merchandise that is described as not just beautiful, but also eclectic, hip, classy and even sassy.

Since its opening in 1979 by Elaine Costello and daughter Lue Zimmelman, Nui Mono has become a local landmark in Moiliili (at 2745 S. King St.), offering unique, handcrafted clothing, accessories and gifts from around the world, as well as its original Nui Mono fashions made with cotton and silk kimono, and other ethnic fabrics.

Costello died in 2012, but Nui Mono continues to grow with Zimmelman and the added talents of local designers Lisa Wiemken, Kim Kono, Wendy Kim Messier and Sherrie Rupert.

Rix Island Wear is known for its fresh designs in Hawaiian aloha shirts, which are all designed and sewn in Hawaii. Founded by Rick Ralston, creator of the famous Crazy Shirts brand, Rix features prints that are bold in design, subtle in color and easy to coordinate. A great one-stop shop for men, it also carries women’s clothing.

Hui Makaala is a nonprofit organization founded in 1946 to promote an understanding and appreciation of Okinawan culture and history in Hawaii. Proceeds from the fashion show luncheon go to Hui Makaala Scholarship Fund. Last year, the organization awarded $18,000 among 11 local high school graduates to further their education.

This week, celebrity stylist Crystal Pancipanci, makeup artist Kecia Littman and hair designer Jake Acedo recap New York Fashion Week for us. This ‘Dream Team’ from Hawaii made its way to the Big Apple last month, getting an up-close look at what’s to come in fashion, hair and beauty next season.

“The silhouettes we saw — and it was everywhere — was the tea-length skirts,” notes Pancipanci. “Every collection was doing it — the very classic, long, to-your-ankle skirts and dresses, and full. It hits the waist at the smallest part of the waist, is so easy to run around in, and it’s a very flattering silhouette for most body shapes.”

Other trends, according to Pancipanci:

* Flats: Flat sandals, including Birkenstock styles, were all over the runway and on the streets. “It was worn by every fashion influencer and blogger,” recalls Pancipanci. “Yay for comfort.”

* Statement clutches: It’s the standout piece of your outfit.

* Big, bold florals: Florals this spring aren’t very soft, demure or delicate. It’s bold statement florals in prints that are bright and colorful.

* Tropical Influences: From flowers to pineapples and palm trees, there were touches of Hawaii on clothes and accessories everywhere.

* White and black: It’s more dominantly white with black layering or black accents.

* Transparency/sheer paneling: “See-through maxi skirts and dresses paired with vintage high-waisted boy shorts were very prominent,” adds Pancipanci.

JAKE ACEDO
Hair designer at W Salon

“This year, I saw a lot of those low nape ponytails with a really sleek, high shine, and a few with a lot of texture and movement,” says Acedo. “I think the best hair I saw was at Carolina Herrera. They created this origami-inspired hair where it’s high-shine, really sleek and the back had this origami type-style that was sculpted but clean.

“Also, we didn’t see too many braids this year, but they didn’t go away. They did a few braid trends on the runway, but for street style, as I was walking around I saw a lot of girls with everyday braids — real tousled with an effortless feel to it. And for color, it’s still that ombre balayage feel.”

KECIA LITTMAN
Makeup artist

Littman, who worked a couple of major shows at Fashion Week, says the beauty trend is a clean face with clean skin. “It’s that no-makeup makeup look — very dewy on the cheeks, nice highlights and a little shimmer,” she explains. “Lips are either coral or a really pale color.”

The key to getting that nice, clean skin look? Moisturize. “Really hydrate your skin, giving your skin that healthy glow,” advises Littman, who lists Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation and Infinite makeup as her favorites. “Then apply a sheer liquid foundation lightly on the skin and conceal where you need it.”

Plato’s Closet

While on vacation in Northern California, Suzanne Green discovered Plato’s Closet, a resale boutique that is part of a national franchise with about 400 locations on the Mainland and in Canada.

In January 2013, she opened Hawaii’s first Plato’s Closet in Honolulu at 1161 S. Beretania St. (on the corner of Beretania and Piikoi streets). The store buys and sells gently used clothing and accessories for teens and 20-somethings.

“After years of working in Hawaii nonprofits (such as foster care, domestic violence and Honolulu Symphony), I knew that families in Hawaii would benefit from having a store that made casual trendy name brand clothes like Nike, Hollister and American Eagle affordable,” says Green. “Our primary customers are between age 13 and 28, both men and women. But we have a little something for everyone.

“(How it works is) customers bring in their gently used casual, trendy items, freshly laundered and neatly folded in a bag or box. Then, one of our certified buyers goes through the items and looks for condition issues, such as wear, fading, pilling, stains, missing buttons or items that either are older styles or don’t sell well in our store, such as business attire. Those items go home with the seller. The items we would like to purchase are entered into the computer, and the computer generates a quote based on brand and condition. We present that quote, and if the seller accepts it, we pay cash on the spot! Items are sold at 50 to 70 percent off retail, and the person who sells it gets about one-third of that price.”

The store also has its popular “Clearance Cycle” going on now with select items marked at 50 percent off. Clearance Cycles take place three to four times a year, and on the last day of clearance, anything left is marked down to $1.

“Dollar Day is so much fun,” adds Green. “We have lots of people lining up before we open. People can get on our email list or follow us on Instagram or Twitter to keep informed as to when clearance and Dollar Days occur.”

Maui Jim’s You Move Me Collection

Maui Jim has released its first ultra-luxury sunglasses collection titled You Move Me, featuring colorful interpretations of Hawaiian flora and fauna by internationally renowned Hawaiian artist Charlie Lyon.

Lyon’s work was transferred on the finest Italian silk and handcrafted into numbered, limited-edition pairs of sunglasses available at a limited number of Maui Jim retailers worldwide.

The sunglasses also are made with Maui Jim’s PolarizedPlus2 lenses, which cut UV rays and glare while enhancing color to produce clear, brilliant vision.

The collection, which arrived in stores this month, is anchored by two Crystal/Silk frame shapes: a rounded, oversized frame (style No. 280); and a squared-off, slightly retro frame (style No. 277). However, no single Crystal/Silk frame is alike because the silk that Lyon’s painting was reproduced on was individually cut and embedded in the crystal acetate, resulting in one-of-a-kind art pieces. Only 270 pairs of the Crystal/Silk style No. 280, and 290 pairs of the Crystal/Silk style No. 277, were made. Suggested retail price is $499. Maui Jim also produced printed acetate frames of the Lyon painting in three distinctive color variations: silk print with white trim and teal interior with neutral gray lenses, navy with white trim and silk print interior with Maui Rose lenses, and black with white trim and silk print interior with neutral gray lenses. Only 500 pairs of each printed acetate style were manufactured. Each pair is stamped with a signature, numbered and available at a limited number of eyewear retailers worldwide at a suggested retail price of $399.

On Oahu, Maui Jim’s You Move Me acetate collection is available at Freaky Tiki in Waikiki and Ala Moana Center. For more information, call Freaky Tiki at 947-4050.

Ryan Seacrest Distinction at Macy’s

Ryan Seacrest has launched his new tailored men’s clothing collection, called Ryan Seacrest Distinction, exclusively at Macy’s. The sophisticated line consists of suit separates, dress shirts, ties and accessories that are designed for easy mixing and matching through its Style Made Smart color matching system. “Thinking back to when I was growing up in Atlanta, I always loved to get dressed up for Sunday School,” he says, explaining to MidWeek why he started a clothing line. “My mom would put my suit on, my tie on, and if we went to Sunday brunch or Easter brunch, I would wear it. And I remember as a kid putting it on and feeling even better about myself. Feeling a little bit more confident.

“Fast Forward to when I started Idol. I worked very closely with Burberry and Christopher Bailey to come up with 30 suits a year that I could wear on the show, and after all the years I hosted, I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting for us to look at any void in the market, or opportunity for a very detailed suit at a very accessible price.”

The Emmy-winning host and producer met with various companies and asked for their research, and they all agreed there was a market for this. Within just one year, partnerships with Randa Accessories, Peerless Clothing and PVH were created, and in August the first Ryan Seacrest Distinction collection was delivered to 150 Macy’s stores nationwide with an official launch last month.

“The goal was to maintain the level, the quality, of really, really small detail into these suits and have them at a price that people could afford, even if it were their first suit for their first job interview,” says Seacrest. “I have bought a lot of clothes in the last 20 years. I love to wear great clothes. I love the detail. I learned a lot from Christopher Bailey. So, I’m not attempting to be a designer, but I did bring in who I think the best designers are, and gave them inspiration for what we want to try to create, which is a stylish apparel and accessory line for active men and contemporary men.”

Seacrest, who notes his last visit to Hawaii was two years ago, when he brought his family to Maui, compares Hawaii’s casual way of dressing to Hollywood, where he now lives. “It’s just as casual, but I do believe my generation, this young generation of professionals and entrepreneurs, they like to dress,” he says. “They want to make a good first impression. And I live by this: You never can be too overdressed for anything.”

Honolulu Community College and Honolulu Star-Advertiser present Full Circle: A Dining and Fashion Experience Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m., featuring the latest designs by HCC alums Kini Zamora, Ari South and Danene Lunn of Manuhealii, as well as current students of HCC’s fashion technology program.

Hosted by Honolulu Design Center at 1250 Kapiolani Blvd., the event takes place in Stage Restaurant and will include a fashion show, three-course meal and silent auction.

“Our program is all about coming full circle,” notes Joy Nagaue, professor and program liaison of HCC’s fashion technology program. “Our alumni go on to have successful careers in the fashion industry and so many of them come back to share their experiences with current students, as well as give back to the program that helped build their foundation in fashion design.”

Zamora, a 2003 graduate of HCC and 2001 graduate of McKinley High School, made it all the way to the top three on the popular reality TV show Project Runway Season 13. After HCC, Zamora went on to New York Fashion Institute of Technology for a year-and-a-half, and then returned to Hawaii to work in retail and the fashion industry. Eventually, he decided to “take the plunge, wholly, into this life of fashion,” and became a full-time designer, creating garments described as “structured pieces with a feminine twist.” He also partnered with Dean “Dinko” Satta to start their company KINIandDINKO, and they recently launched their website KINIandDINKO.com.

South, a 2007 graduate of HCC and 2004 graduate of Waianae High, was a finalist on Project Runway Season 8. She has her own design and manufacturing company, Andy South, offering women’s contemporary clothing with a “severe chic attitude.” Her line is available at shop.andysouth.com or for custom orders, email info@andysouth.com.

Lunn, a 1986 graduate of HCC and 1980 graduate of St. Andrew’s Priory, is the creative director/owner of Manuhealii. The 29-year-old company is known for its modern aloha collectives for the family, and can be found at its Honolulu flagship store (at 930 Punahou St.), Kailua boutique (5 Hoolai St.) and online at manuhealii.com.

Tickets for Full Circle: A Dining and Fashion Experience range from $100 to $200, and include a special swag bag. Proceeds will go to support the Fashion Technology Program and Fashion Technology Scholarship Fund at HCC to benefit students in the program. Mini Eel and Mini Ava Sky

This month, Fighting Eel and Ava Sky releases its holiday collection for girls — Mini Eel and Mini Ava Sky.

The popular local brands, created by Lan Chung and Rona Bennett, began offering Mini Eel in 2009 and Mini Ava Sky just last year. Designed for girls who are more fashion conscious, the collection is described as modern and city chic, not frilly. Sizes range from 2T to 10. “We are trying a new bamboo fabric blend in our holiday collection for Mini Eel,” notes Linh Owen, business manager. “It’s softer and moms like that on their kids. As for Ava Sky, we like separates. Traditionally, little girls wear dresses, but we are doing separates also and it’s been a big hit.”

Mini Eel features basic jersey typical to Fighting Eel’s signature fabric. Ava Sky, which is named after Chung’s daughter, has a more resort-wear look, and is made with rayon/tencil-blend fabrics as well as jersey. “The best thing about this is that both lines are ‘love’ projects for the company,” adds Owen. “It’s quite a bit of work to do mini styles when we don’t sell that much of it. Financially, it doesn’t make sense to do it, but sometimes you have to go with your heart, and our hearts say the mini collections are a must!”

Mini Eel and Mini Ava Sky are available exclusively at Fighting Eel boutiques (in Downtown, Kailua and Waikiki) and online. Featured here are some of the latest styles available now. For more information, visit fightingeel.com or call 738-9300.

Allison Izu Song, Summer Shiigi and Rumi Murakami

One year ago this month, designers Allison Izu Song and Summer Shiigi partnered to form The Cut Collective, an innovative company dedicated to helping other local designers and businesses reach their goals by offering the resources and skills needed in streamlining the design and production process.

“Our hope is to transform the local manufacturing industry to be the most affordable, innovative option that will provide high-quality made-in-Hawaii products to support the local economy,” explains Shiigi. “We also strive to uplift the industry by offering mentorship and consulting to designers.”

Song is the owner/designer of Allison Izu, a clothing company focusing on the petite woman. She also recently started a family line called Love & Aloha for men, women and children. Shiigi, a freelance fashion stylist, is the owner of Summer Style Hawaii. She also has a newly launched brand called Ten Tomorrow.

Located in Manoa (at 2800 Woodlawn Drive, Suite 192), The Cut Collective also serves as a fashion incubator workspace for designers, such as Rumi Murakami, whose womenswear line consists of tailored modern pieces.

Fashions by all three designers also can be found at various events throughout the island. The next one is Kakaako’s A Pinch of Salt Holiday Pop Up Sunday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 445 Cooke St.

“We are incredibly dedicated to the local industry and offering services that weren’t previously available under one roof,” adds Shiigi, noting they currently have three recent University of Hawaii graduates developing their fashion lines at The Cut Collective. “There is so much talent here in Hawaii, and we truly believe that it’s a great time to be creative.”

This year, Friends of Honolulu City Lights have created a special ornament to honor the event’s 30th anniversary.

They also have created another “Holoholo” ornament to honor the world voyage of Hokule‘a. The ornament depicts Santa aboard his sailing canoe surrounded by stars.

Both ornaments can be purchased for $18 at any Macy’s store on Oahu, or any Oahu branch of First Hawaiian Bank. It also is available on the Friends’ website (honolulucitylights.org) for shipping to friends and family.

For more than 14 years, the Friends have built a network of ornament collectors that reach across the Mainland, Asia, Europe, Canada and Australia. Each of the 2000-2014 ornaments was designed by Owen Ho, who also created the iconic Shaka Santa.

Honolulu City Lights opened Dec. 6 with the lighting of the City Christmas tree.

Pineapple Palaka

Pineapple Palaka, a fine clothing company specializing in handmade silk neckties, recently launched its first line in October. Founded by Jonathan Fong and Rick Abelmann, the ties are designed by local artists and are described as unique pieces of art incorporating designs that represent the aloha spirit.

“We both worked on the Mainland and wore suits and ties regularly,” explains Fong, who graduated from Kamehameha Schools before attending Brigham Young University-Provo, and worked in sales for the past 10 years. “On the days that I wore aloha shirts, I would always get crazy looks. I wanted to create something that I could blend in and still show my Hawaii roots. Rick (who also went to BYU-Provo, and law school in St. Louis, and worked in Hong Kong before moving to Honolulu to start a law firm, Abelmann Rollins) wears ties regularly to court and wanted something that embodied the aloha spirit.

“We spent over a year looking for the highest-quality materials, construction and manufacturing processes to create the perfect tie. Also, our classic palaka backing and tie loop make our ties very unique. We chose palaka because it represents strength and has many deep ties to old Hawaii.”

A second collection of ties is in the works, as well as a kid’s line, which is expected to arrive early next year. They also are looking into creating a women’s line centered around palaka.

Pineapple Palaka is available at Trump Hotel Waikiki, Island Treasures Art Gallery in Kailua, Island Treasures at the Marina, Polynesian Cultural Center’s new outdoor marketplace and online at pineapplepalaka.com. Also, follow them on Facebook or Instagram for holiday deals and giveaways, and see if you can spot some of the many local celebrities and sports stars wearing Pineapple Palaka neckties. MW-Style-121714-leighton-lam

If you’re still looking for that perfect gift this Christmas, consider Leighton Lam Designs. Known for its beautiful Island-inspired fashion jewelry, the locally owned, family-run business also is dedicated to giving back to the community. Every holiday season, the company partners with a local nonprofit to donate a portion of sales made on its website, leightonlam.com. This year, 50 percent of all purchases made online from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 will be donated to Make-A-Wish Hawaii.

A lifelong surfer, Leighton Lam (pictured above) started his career as an artist making surfboards out of resin before transitioning to sculptures and artwork, and then eventually jewelry in the late 1970s. He started Leighton Lam Designs in 1979, and creates many of his pieces with inspiration from Hawaii’s native plants and animals. Today, he continues to draw each new design by hand, then it’s crafted into jewelry using the highest-quality materials and finest craftsmanship. “We are one of the few jewelry companies that creates designs reflective of Hawaii’s plants and animals,” says daughter Kaily Lam Smitson, who serves as sales director. “Aside from popular turtles and plumeria, we focus on the Hawaiian culture, with designs like the ulu, kukui, pikake and other lesser-known Hawaiian plants. “Leighton is an artist, and we hope that is reflected in our jewelry. A lot of jewelry in the marketplace is assembled (with parts put together), whereas a lot of our pieces are not assembled but rather an actual design or art piece (in jewelry form).”

Leighton Lam Designs can be found in various stores and resort boutiques throughout the state, including Aulani Resort, Macy’s, Lamonts, Accents, Whaler’s General Store, Oasis Lifestyle, Hawaiian Quilt Collection, Dole, Kualoa Ranch and more. For more information, visit leightonlam.com or call 373-3317.

Our Favorite Things

We all have our favorite things — whether it’s in our closet, on a bookshelf, in our CD player or simply something we just can’t live without. Still Christmas shopping? We asked some of our favorite celebrities what their favorite things are, resulting in a great list of gift ideas. It’s a MidWeek Style feature that’s become one of my favorite holiday traditions. Wishing you and your family a safe and happy holiday season filled with love, laughter, and, what the heck, some amazing gifts too!

Favorite Christmas item: Many things but a real and fresh Christmas tree is the bomb. (He’s pictured with the Christmas tree in the lobby of his condo, which he decorates every year.)

Favorite holiday tradition: Christmas concert.

What is the best Christmas gift you ever received? Sounds corny, but a hug from someone I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Favorite item in your closet: Long-sleeve white shirt with French cuffs and my skinny jeans.

Favorite accessory: New puka shell necklace from Paumalu.

Something you have that you think every person should own: Confidence and gratitude.

Something you can’t live without: Friends.

Favorite book: River God.

Favorite CD: Mannheim Steamroller first Christmas album.

Favorite DVD: How to Train Your Dragon

Anything new happening/coming up? A new CD, perhaps Hula Vol. 3; Merrie Monarch 2015; and to celebrate 40 years teaching my Halau Na Kamalei O Lililehua.

Favorite Christmas item: We got married in December 2011 and these personalized ornaments were gifts from our friends and family. They mean a lot to us because they’re a reminder of our special day. Our family is getting bigger and we’ll need to get several more ornaments to add to the tree!

Favorite holiday tradition: Enjoying the neighborhood parade and seeing the holiday lights and displays with family after our annual Christmas dinner.

Favorite item in your closet: Black stretchy maternity skirt. I purchased several because they’re so comfortable!

Favorite accessory: Silver swirl sparkling drop earrings that I got in Thailand. They pretty much match any outfit.

Something you have that you think every person (or parent) should own? A “Grapple,” which looks like a toy rubber apple.

This small item is a big help when eating out or at an event with your baby. It has a suction cup on the bottom to keep it in place on a table and rubber cords that fasten around your child’s toys.

With this, your baby stays entertained and keeps you from having to constantly pick up toys dropped on the ground.

Another must-have? Stainless steel multiple blade food scissors. The blades easily cut up big adult portions into tiny bite-size pieces. When your baby is hungry, time is of the essence. The scissors are a lot faster than cutting food using a knife.

Another favorite is our Baby Breeza. It’s just like a coffee maker except it makes ready-to-drink warmed-up baby formula in however many ounces with the press of a button. It really comes in handy when your hands are full or you’re carrying your newborn baby and you don’t have much help.

Favorite book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Baby’s First Words and Goodnight Gorilla … because they’ve helped expand Dylan’s imagination and vocabulary, and he enjoys them so much.

Favorite CD: I have so many favorite music albums, but some of my favorite music artists are Stan Getz, Jason Mraz, Thievery Corporation, Alicia Keys and Bruddah Iz.

Favorite DVD: During the holidays The Sound of Music always puts me in a good mood and has me singing along!

Anything new happening/coming up? Yes, my husband and I are expecting twin boys! I’m due around the middle of March. We’re super excited for their arrival … but with two on the way plus Dylan, we know we have a lot of work cut out for us! With that said, Ryan and I are very blessed, fortunate and thankful for our family because they have always been willing to help with anything we need from the get go … including baby-sitting!

Favorite Christmas item: Love my hot Christmas drinks from Starbucks.

Favorite holiday tradition: Tearing through stocking stuffers on Christmas Eve!

What did you ask Santa for this year? Drone or new standup paddleboard … couldn’t decide!

What is the best Christmas gift you ever received? Wife! Married Dec. 22, seven years ago.

Favorite item in your closet: Any of my Quiksilver Waterman shirts — love them.

Favorite accessory: I travel a lot and when I do, I can’t live without noise-canceling Bose headphones and my neck pillow.

What is something you have that you think every person should own? Any Apple product!

Something you can’t live without? Coffee.

Favorite book: So many, but the Bible is what I read most often.

Favorite CD: Who uses CDs and DVDs? I don’t get to listen to my songs now — it’s all kids music, which is fine. My daughter loves I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.

Favorite DVD: When the Game Stands Tall. Just saw this movie and it really inspired me. I have always focused on helping create a program that focuses on the development of young people into not only great volleyball players, but also those who significantly give back to the communities that have given them so much.

What are you working on now? Just became head coach of Pepperdine and I have a lot of work to make it into a top team like Dave Shoji’s Rainbow Wahine.

Anything new happening/coming up? My wife and I have been blessed to have some great relationships with our time growing up and over the last five years of coaching in Hawaii, but we are looking forward to our move to Malibu.

Favorite Christmas item: Peppermint desserts! (She’s pictured with a chocolate peppermint cake from Rise & Shine in Mililani.)

What did you ask Santa for this year? For our Happy Christmas Concert at Ala Moana Hotel with Ben and Maila to sell out, and it sold out in 10 days!

What is the best Christmas gift you ever received? My husband and I purchased our home (in Mililani) in 2007 and moved in right before Christmas. It was brand new and made us feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Favorite item in your closet: I have a pair of black suede Nine West boots that I’ve had for at least six or seven years and I love them!

Favorite accessory: My wedding ring.

What is something you have that you think every person should own? A really good planner that inspires them to write in it. While technology is great, I love seeing things written down.

Something you can’t live without: My Bible and my journal. I try to read my Bible and write in my journal every day.

Favorite book: I just read Girlboss and loved it. It took me a plane ride to Florida to read it! It’s funny and inspiring. As for novels, I also loved Memoirs of a Geisha.

Favorite CD: Mariah Carey’s Music Box. I have every lyric and note memorized, and love singing along with it from start to finish. My sister Kanoe and I used to listen to it over and over, and sing along with it in high school. I bust it out every now and then.

Favorite DVD: The Devil Wears Prada or Serendipity. I can watch both of those movies over and over, and I just love that they’re set in New York. And since it’s Christmas, let’s add Elf to the mix too! I love quoting the lines and when the reindeer take off into the sky at the end, I always tear up. It’s so innocent.

Anything new happening/coming up? Right now, I’m working on a new CD with Ben Vegas. Hopefully it will be out in February. We perform at Aulani every Thursday and at HASR Bistro on select Fridays. I’m also Realtor relations director for Hawaii VA Loans, and am having a blast helping to grow that business.

Favorite Christmas item(s): My daughter Lehiwa, who was born on Christmas Eve, and, of course, Hawaiian Host chocolate products.

Favorite holiday tradition: Going to my grandma’s hale, spending time with my ohana and watching the keiki open their gifts, and, of course, all the ono food.

Favorite fashion accessory: My gold bracelets. I have one with my name on it, which I got for my 16th birthday, one for my high school graduation present, Blaze gave me one with our daughter’s name on it and I also have one from my mom that has my name on it because she wore it when she gave birth to me. I love my bracelets because they all have a sentimental meaning.

MW-Style-122414-Christmas--Kawehi-HH_AlohaMacs-7Milk_6Dark MW-Style-122414-Christmas--Kawehi-LT005

Favorite book: I own many Hawaiiana books from place names, ancient stories and, of course, Mary Kawena Pukui’s dictionary. As a Hawaiian, it’s important to stay connected with my culture and I encourage those who live here to get to know our culture. I also feel that it’s my job as a parent to pass down traditions and teach my children our culture, and hopefully they can continue the tradition for many years.

Besides my Hawaiiana books, I always will love The Notebook, and, yes, it’s also one of my favorite movies. I’m a sucker for romantic stories.

Something you can’t live without: Coffee! I love coffee … I don’t consume as much as I used to, but I have my morning brew and, only on occasion now, I will have my afternoon pick-me-up. Now that it’s the holidays, I love drinking holiday-flavored drinks. My current favorite is Hot Peppermint Mocha Latte.

Favorite CD: I personally don’t have a favorite CD, but my daughter loves listening to her Disney nursery rhyme CD in the car. She has a book to follow along with the different stories the Disney characters read. I like it because it’s educational and it’s Disney! We love everything Disney!

As we welcome the start of 2015, we also welcome a new first lady to Washington Place. Meet Dawn Amano-Ige, wife of Hawaii’s eighth governor, David Ige. A school vice principal, Amano-Ige is currently on a leave of absence to serve as first lady.

Born and raised in Ewa, she graduated from Campbell High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Hawaii. She also has an MBA from Chaminade University, and a professional diploma in Elementary Education from University of Hawaii.

Prior to becoming a vice principal, she was an elementary school teacher, and also has worked as a public relations account executive and marketing director for a healthcare system.

Favorite item in your closet: Pink dress (by Taylor) that I wore on Primary Election Night (Aug. 9). It’s festive, colorful and fun. I purchased it from Nordstrom Rack for $20. I love a good find.

Favorite designer(s): One of my favorite dresses is the one I wore at the inauguration celebration dinner. It’s by designer Jeanie Chun. Mrs. (Jean) Ariyoshi introduced me to her. I love the way she designed the dress with lace and a little shine.
