The 48th annual University of Hawaii Senior Fashion Show is set for April 27 at Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, featuring the designs of seven senior and seven junior designers.

For the show, titled Reverie: Daydreams Set Adrift, each senior designer will show her individual collection, as well as her designs for two special categories – Reinvented Culture and Rational Science. Reinvented Culture features sustainable designs using recycled materials, inspired by modern folklore/ethnicity, a nostalgic sensibility and a succession of tradition.

Rational Science consists of wearable technology using LED lights, inspired by geometric minimalism and modern avant-garde.

The junior designers will open the show with their designs. The show takes place in the hotel’s Kona Moku ballroom. A silent auction begins at 4:30 p.m., and the fashion show at 6. Tickets cost $25, or $50 for VIP (includes reserved seating and a gift bag). BOY’S DAY OR CHILDREN’S DAY, a Japanese holiday traditionally designated to honor sons in the family but has evolved to include all children, is celebrated May 5.

On this special day, families will fly koinobori or carp-shaped streamers outside their homes (with the number of carps representing the number of boys in the household), and buy gifts for their children, such as intricate samurai dolls (representing strength and bravery) inside a glass case displayed in the house.

Featured here are some fun Boy’s Day fashions and gift items available at Shirokiya through May 5, or while supplies last. Also, stop by Shirokiya’s Ohana Sunday event May 4 from 1 to 4 p.m., celebrating both Boy’s Day and Mother’s Day. There will be a Mother’s Day fashion show, craft projects for kids, temporary tattoos and a photo station.

Jams World Celebrates 50 Years

Jams World, known for its fun, colorful clothing, celebrates its 50th anniversary with various upcoming events, including a photo contest on its Facebook page.

Post your photos of Jams World moments now through Sept. 30, and those with the most likes will be awarded gift certificates. Photos may capture a day at the beach, a birthday celebration, Aloha Friday, a celebrity captured wearing Jams World, etc.

Also in the works is Jams World Day, and a competition for fashion students to design a new look for the next collection. The company was founded in 1964 by Dave Rochlen, who was a lifeguard, surfer, paddleboard racer and dirt-bike rider in Santa Monica before moving to Hawaii 1962 and opening a surf shop called Surf Line Hawaii. Inspired by a LIFE magazine article showing Russian tourists swimming in the Black Sea wearing bathrobes and pajamas to the beach, Rochlen bought some brightly printed fabric and asked his wife, Keanuenue, to make him pajama shorts cut off at the knee and with a sewed up fly. Soon, his surfing buddies wanted a pair too, and he started selling them out of the trunk of his car at Makaha Beach and at his Surf Line Hawaii surfboard shop. Surfing world champion Mike Doyle wore the first pair at Makaha in 1964, and North Shore surf pioneer Butch Van Artsdalen also wore Jams.

Then, LIFE magazine ran a two-page spread featuring Rochlen and his friends modeling the new beachwear, and the trend took off worldwide.

Today, Jams World continues its philosophy of color, freedom, difference, humor and love, and searches the world for hand-painted art that inspires, then screen prints it on exclusive spun crushed rayon. All garments are manufactured in Honolulu, and each print has coordinating hand-painted buttons created by a California artist.

There are six Jams World stores on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island featuring clothing, jewelry, accessories and gift items. Jams World apparel also can be found in 33 U.S. Mainland states and internationally in Australia, Canada, Japan, China, Korea, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The company employs 85 people, with some having worked for Jams for more than 40 years. For more information, visit jamsworld.com.

Twin Islands has opened its first retail store in Kailua located at 131 Hekili St. (across from the bowling alley).

The company is named after the Mokulua Islands, also known as the Twin Islands to locals, located a mile offshore of Lanikai Beach. The brand was founded by Mike Miller, who created it in honor of his late twin brother, Peter, who died in a plane crash March 8, 2006. Twin Islands made its online debut March 8, 2009, three years to the day after Peter’s passing, and has been available at various stores and surf shops for the past five years.

The twins grew up surfing out at the Twin Islands, and both followed in their father’s footsteps by becoming pilots. Mike is a pilot for Island Air, Peter was a pilot for Hawaii Air Ambulance, and their father flew for Aloha Airlines. Mike continues to carry on the legacy of his twin through his growing surf company. “The bird in our logo represents Peter hovering over us all,” he explains.

Twin Islands also will host its 10th annual Kailua Shorebreak Classic Aug. 30 in memory of Peter Miller and his close Kailua friends Jason Bogle, David Aluli and Jeff Barbieto. Entry forms will be available at the Twin Islands store starting Aug. 1.

Hawaii Opera Theatre presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, a comedy about love and execution, June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall.

HOT artistic director Henry Akina serves as stage director, and fashion designer Anne Namba joined the team as costume designer. Her inspiration for the costumes included Harajuku girls, yakuza and anime for the main characters, and obon dancers, sushi chefs, karate fighters, Japanese tourists, more Harajuku girls and marathon runners for the chorus.

“It’s a new, modern-day version of The Mikado,” explains Namba. “Coming up with the concept of the characters and how to make modern-day Japanese stereotypes, that was fun trying to figure it all out and then transpose it to looks.”

Namba has worked on three other productions with HOT, and will return again as costume designer for Madam Butterfly in October.

Here’s a sneak peek at the costumes worn by the soloists of The Mikado. Tickets to The Mikado start at $29. For more information, visit HawaiiOpera.org or call the HOT Box Office at 596-7858.

A limited amount of tickets to the fashion show and VIP pre-sale are available for $20, and can be purchased online (look for the link at higoodwill.org/glam).

Hours for the public GLAM! sale are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 18 and 19; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20. Tickets cost $4 and are available for purchase at Blaisdell box office.

Proceeds from Bank of Hawaii presents Goodwill Goes GLAM! are used to raise awareness of Goodwill’s nonprofit mission to help people with employment barriers reach their full potential and become self-sufficient. In 2012-2013, Goodwill helped more than 13,000 people in Hawaii through its programs and services statewide, and aided more than 1,600 people in finding employment.

Mila’s Closet, a children’s new and resale boutique, has opened in Windward City Shopping Center in Kaneohe, offering a great selection of high-quality children’s apparel (for newborns to size 14), toys, books, accessories and maternity wear. The store is named after Mila Bueno, and was opened by her grandmother Clarissa Bueno and godmother Peggy Chock. “Our kids are grown adults, so it wasn’t until Mila was born last year that we were reminded again of how quickly kids outgrow everything,” says Bueno. “And there’s an abundance of it with just one child — imagine more than one. We thought it would be a great opportunity for our communities to benefit by a children’s boutique that enabled them to ‘sell, shop and save’ all in one place. “Mila’s Closet serves as a way to encourage families to recycle and reuse and reduce the impact on our environment.”

Consignors can bring in their high-quality, like-new children’s clothing, hard-cover books, toys, DVDs and other unique children’s treasures during store hours. It also accepts designer handbags and wallets on consignment. No appointment is necessary.

“We select the items we believe customers want or are looking for, according to our current inventory,” notes Bueno. “Consignors will receive 50 percent of the sale price in cash or check. They also can use their account balance to purchase merchandise.”

Mila’s Closet is located at 45-480 Kaneohe Bay Drive, and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and

Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 200-7258 or visit facebook.com/milasclosethawaii or its Instagram page at milascloset_hawaii.
