Community

In an effort to promote local designers and artists, as well as brands that she enjoys personally, Julie Waters opened a store called Community last July in Chinatown.

“The concept is to have a space where local designers and artists can showcase their collections and be able to create the look and feel that they feel properly represents their aesthetic,” says Waters (pictured at left), who grew up and still lives in Kailua. “Also, they can use the space to do launch parties, line releases and events to create excitement to the collections.”

Waters, who has been a sales representative in the fashion industry in Hawaii for 20 years, says Chinatown’s creative energy and growth seemed to be the perfect environment for her store, noting that she usually participates in Chinatown’s monthly First Friday festivities with an in-store event.

Some of the brands available are Organik, Obey, Lost, Indah, Jens Pirate Booty, Black Swan, Lucy Love, Havaianas, Cameron Hawaii, Khush, Maaji Lingerie, Umee Honolulu, Big Buddha, Sati Gems, Kai Luxe Jewelry, Ola by Hawaiian Body Products, Kimi and Li Bikini, Mother Denim, Super Sunglasses and art by Jamie Allen and Kelly Patrick.

“The feel of Community is very comfortable and creative,” adds Waters. “We have men’s, women’s and kid’s apparel and accessories. There’s something for everyone. We also have rotating artists every month, so there’s always something new to see and check out.”

Community is located at 22 S. Pauahi St. (across from Hawaii Theatre). For more information, call 523-0001 or visit it on Facebook and Instagram at communityhi.

Posh by Honolulu Community College Fashion Technology Students

The Honolulu Community College Fashion Technology Program presents Posh, a student designer fashion show Saturday, April 27, at the Marine Education & Training Center at Sand Island, featuring the designs of 19 graduating senior designers, as well as other students.

“This is the biggest senior class I’ve ever had,” says Joy Nagaue, associate professor and head of the fashion technology department. “We’ve sold out of tickets already, and this is the fastest we’ve sold out – in about four days. But we decided to offer standing-room-only tickets.

“Besides designing and sewing, the students have worked so hard on putting this show together. They take a fashion show production class by Tania de Jesus, and have been putting on fundraisers, such as car washes, to help pay for a lot of the expenses.”

Standing-room-only tickets cost $10 (does not include refreshments) and can be purchased at HCC or at the door the night of the event. Doors open at 6 p.m. for regular ticket holders, and at 7 for standing-room-only. The fashion show starts at 7:30. For more information, call 845-9203.

Sheryl Lowe Appearance At Neiman Marcus

Sheryl Lowe, one of Hollywood’s leading make-up artists for more than 20 years and wife of actor Rob Lowe (who is in Hawaii with her this week), makes an appearance at Neiman Marcus on Saturday, May 4, from noon to 5 p.m. to celebrate the Honolulu debut of her jewelry line, Sheryl Lowe Designs. A trunk show also will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Designer Jewelry department on level one of Neiman Marcus with Lowe’s proceeds benefitting the Dream Foundation, a charity that grants final dreams from the heart for adults with a life-limiting illness.

In 2007, inspired by her world travels, Lowe created jewelry for a small group of friends as gifts and tokens of friendship. With an overwhelming response to her designs and with the advice of longtime friend Maria Shriver, she created her jewelry line and donates a portion of all proceeds to various women’s and children’s charities. Each style of jewelry is named after Sheryl’s close friends and the various places in the world that she loves to visit.

Salty Girl Jewelry

Amber Chesebro grew up around art and jewelry, so it’s no surprise that she would become a jewelry designer.

“My father paints landscape paintings with oils, acrylics and watercolors, and my mother sold her amazingly crafted macrame jewelry when we were younger and she was a stay-at-home mom,” she explains.

Born in Rhode Island and raised in a fishing village on the coast of Maine, Chesebro graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 with a BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing before moving to Hawaii, where she found work for a local jeweler.

“Ever since I started learning metalsmithing techniques I dreamed of having my own line of jewelry,” says Chesebro, 30. “I always have so many designs floating around in my head, and I felt it would be a waste if I didn’t do anything with them and spent my life working for someone else.”

In 2010, she started Salty Girl Jewelry, which is described as high-end beach chic with a slight edge. “My intention is to create handmade jewelry that is elegant and wearable without being boring,” she says. “My jewelry is mostly inspired by nature, and my main focus is strong design and originality.”

Each finely crafted piece is fabricated from sterling silver, 14k gold-fill and 14k rose gold-fill. To add color, Chesebro incorporates a variety of natural materials, such as beetle wings, shells, coral, sea-glass and semi-precious stones. Featured here are some of Salty Girl’s newest designs, including the just-released Limu-inspired jewelry available with or without diamonds.

Salty Girl Jewelry can be found at Sand People, Roberta Oaks in Chinatown; Showcase Hawaii gift shop in Hawaii State Art Museum; Rebecca Beach in Kahala Hotel & Resort; Oceanology in Whaler’s Village in Lahaina; HiFI Coop in Ward Warehouse; Restir Surfside in Tokyo; and an online store at saltygirljewelry.com (MidWeek readers can take 15 percent off with coupon code MIDWEEKSGJ through May 22).

House of Aria

Downtown Honolulu is known as the business district of Oahu, but in recent years it also has become a fun shopping community with trendy fashion boutiques moving in, including House of Aria, which opened in February 2012.

Owner Melody Domingo says she relocated the store, originally located in Pearl City, to 1140 Bethel St. to accommodate a growing clientele from East Oahu.

“Our shoppers can expect to find clothing styles that range from casual to cocktail attire,” she says. “We can dress you for any occasion from an everyday outfit to a breezy lunch date or a special occasion dinner/party.”

On the First Friday of every month, House of Aria extends its store hours and holds a trunk show featuring a local designer. The next event takes place June 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. and will showcase B.E.A.D.S. HI, specializing in custom macrame and shamballa bracelets.

“We also are planning to hold our second annual summer fashion show in July,” adds Domingo. “More details will be coming next month, so look out for that.”

Gypsea Boutique

Kailua continues to become a must-visit boutique shopping destination, with the recent opening of Gypsea Boutique offering a great selection of clothing, home decor, gift items, fashion accessories and more.

Owners Hawley and Todd Quick also own fashion boutique Flower Child in Kailua, which opened in 2009, and have been looking for a second location for an accessory store where they could expand to carry more home decor items, shoes, handbags, as well as their original clothing designs.

Located at 439 Uluniu St. next to Tokoname Sushi Bar & Restaurant, Gypsea features original designs that the couple has collected on their travels, items from some of their favorite local designers and various brands from L.A. Some of the labels you’ll find are Tiare Hawaii, Bali Designs, Khush Hawaii, Gaya, Sanctuary clothing, Allen Allen, Lucky Brand, Toms shoes, Seychelles shoes, Chinese Laundry, Kerry Cassill, Otaheite, Soludos shoes, Votivo candles and more.

“The name Gypsea represents a woman who travels the far seas looking for all the things she loves,” says Hawley, who was born and raised in Kailua. “I have always been into arts and crafts, fashion design, home decorating, and always had a motivation to do something with it all. My family and I have always been vintage collectors. We’ve done many craft fairs selling our art and loved doing that but wanted to move on to something else. I’ve seen Kailua’s growth in the last eight years or so, and saw the potential to start up our business in retail.”

Milieu

For six years, Rylee Cabaniero worked her way up from sales to manager to buyer at Philanthropy by Madison and Company in Waipio, so when the store closed eight months ago, she decided to open her own boutique in its place called Milieu (pronounced mil-yoo). Located at 94-1235 B Ka Uka Blvd., the boutique focuses on carrying specialty, oneof-a-kind pieces at affordable prices.

Brands you’ll find include Chief Hawaii, Tylie Malibu, Love at Dawn, Khush Clothing, Ginger Lamb, Melinda Y. Butler Jewelry, Kira Hawaii, Pieces of Me and She Speaks. The store also houses artwork by local artists including The Waves of Change, Pastenture, Mackdizz and Dylan McCain.

“I try my best to balance the daily operations of the shop and family life of two little ones at home,” says Cabaniero, 24. “Milieu is a hidden gem for Oahu, especially for people out West who don’t feel like going far.

It’s a refreshing boutique that features a variety of current and upcoming specialty apparel, accessories, jewelry and novelty items. We also have a consignment/recycled section where we sell gently loved apparel, handbags, accessories and shoes. Our buyer, Lynn Dagan, offers consignment services for designer goods.”

A summer family event is in the works to take place at the end of July featuring trunk shows and services by local vendors. For more information, visit facebook.com/milieuhi or milieuhawaii.net, follow them on Instagram @milieuhawaii or call 744-8667.
