[ki*ele]

Local jewelry company [ki*ele] kicks off its fifth anniversary with a sneak preview of the spring/summer Aloha Hawaii 2013 collection at a trunkshow at Nordstrom Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "The Aloha Hawaii collection introduces original [ki*ele] gold and silver-dipped sea charms in fun hoops and earrings, plus dainty, layerable necklaces," says designer/owner Marylea Conrad (pictured above). "Also, new resin jewelry pieces that are great to break-up the metal look of the beach bangles." Conrad, who was born and raised in Australia and moved to Hawaii after college nine years ago, earned a bachelor of design degree in fashion & textile design at the University of Technology in Sydney. In 2008, she launched [ki*ele] which is named after her youngest daughter and features Hawaii-inspired jewelry, specifically resonating the sea and shell life in Hawaii. All handmade in Hawaii, [ki*ele] is known for its quality, affordability and versatility, and beautiful assortment of hammered beach bangles, rings, earrings, necklaces in sterling silver and 14K gold-filled, as well as dainty sea-themed necklaces with starfish, seahorse and other Hawaiian sea creature motifs. There also are dainty anklets, and hammered initial/personalized jewelry. "[ki*ele] is a brand strongly attached to Hawaii," adds Conrad, who also has an older daughter named Melia. "Growing up, you can ask my parents that THE ONLY place I wanted to visit each year was Hawaii! I was always brought back to the Islands. My husband was brought to the Islands, too, from California, and now my children are 'of' the Islands. Each week we frequent the beach and breathe in the fresh salty air and soak in the 'aina that surrounds us. "There is a deeper root in the design and business side of the brand; it's the complete love affair with Hawaii, specifically: Hawaii's beach, shells and sea." On Oahu, [ki*ele] can be found at Nordstrom, Red Bamboo in Kailua, GreenRoom Hawaii Waikiki and Nohea Gallery at Ward Warehouse. There also is Kiki Beach by [ki*ele], an affordable, youth fashion jewelry beach line released last summer and available at T&C Surf Designs and Honolua Surf Co. Also, just in time for Valentine's Day, [ki*ele] will launch its 2013 Aloha Hawaii website Feb. 7 featuring more exciting pieces. For more information, visit ki-ele.com or call 561-5691.

Beloved Boutique

Kimi Chu and Mari Nakanishi (pictured here) already have graduated from college, but they're back on campus with the opening of Beloved Boutique at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Nakanishi earned a bachelor's degree in business management from UH, and Chu has a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California, San Diego; however, they both have worked in the retail industry and share an interest in fashion. In 2011, they started Beloved Boutique as a mobile boutique popping up at various events, including at the UH Campus Center, where they quickly built a following of regular customers. So, when they heard that UH was renting out space in the Hemenway Hall Courtyard near one of the school's popular dining areas (Manoa Garden), they decided to move in. The store offers feminine, simple and classy fashions that are reasonably priced (tops range from $32.90 to $38.90, dresses from $36.90 to $55.90, handbags from $35.90 to $59.90 and fashion jewelry from $11.90 to $25.90). "We try to offer very simple, classic apparel and accessories that our customers can dress up to wear out, and wear to the office or formal events," note Nakanishi and Chu, both 2004 graduates of Pearl City High School. "We want to sell pieces that will stay in closets for a long time and will outlast the trends of the season. "This was really a God-driven venture. God has opened up many doors to make this possible; we never really envisioned ourselves doing this, but it's been a blessing so far and something we realized we really enjoy doing." Beloved Boutique is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You also can shop online at belovedboutique.bigcartel.com. Angels by the Sea

As a little girl growing up in Vietnam, Nina Thai would often help her mom and aunty, who were seamstresses. She also worked as a model, and through her family background and fashion experience, quickly realized a passion for creating and designing. In 2005, she moved to Hawaii and was immediately inspired by the island's beauty, culture and people. In 2010, she decided to pursue her dream and opened Angels by the Sea Hawaii, a boutique in the Waikiki Beach Marriott (2552 Kalakaua Ave.). "I wanted a place where I can express my passion through my design featuring Hawaii's beautiful nature and culture," explains Thai on starting her business. "I always have been wanting to share this beauty with as many people as possible from all over the world and to smile with them, helping them become angels." The store carries a great selection of women's clothing, handbags, jewelry and accessories, including original Angels by the Sea designs and other popular brands and local designers. There also is a nice variety of beauty products and home decor items. "Without Hawaii, I would never have been able to pursue my dreams and passion," adds Thai. "I am so grateful for the people I've met here and the beauty I see every day, which continues to inspire me as I look to the future." When Parker Moosman moved to Hawaii in 2008 with wife Ali, a Kailua girl and owner of Olive boutique, he noticed there weren't too many places for men to shop in Kailua. So when space opened up a couple of doors down from Olive, the couple took it and opened Oliver Men's Shop, offering a great selection of men's T-shirts, boardshorts, aloha shirts and accessories. "I'm a jeans and T-shirt kinda guy," says Moosman, 32. "I want to stock Oliver with classic pieces (not trendy or fashion-forward pieces) that will stay in your closet for a long time. It's a small shop, but I pack it full of quality goods at a reasonable price. And everything fits Island living." Some of the brands you'll find at Oliver are Aloha Sunday, T.C.S.S., Scotch & Soda, M. Nii, Lightning Bolt, as well as a great assortment of jewelry by local designers and fun "guy stuff" such as Whisky Stones, flasks and vintage belts. "I am bringing in a couple of really fun lines that haven't had much exposure in Hawaii, such as Deus ex Machina, Quality Peoples and Freedom Artists," adds Moosman, who was born and raised in Spokane, Wash., and resides in Lanikai. "Also, our Oliver logo tee has been so popular, I'm working on a couple more fun designs. "I like to think that I have something for everyone, not just for men. I have unisex clothing, candles, bags, skin care from Ursa Major, wallets, keychains, iPhone cases, classic toothpaste from Marvis and more." Moosman, who spent his 20s in Seattle playing piano for a living, also is working on an Oliver CD featuring a compilation of cover songs by a local musician. "It's really fun, classic songs, redone with a more island feel," he explains. Oliver Men's Shop is located at 49 Kihapai St. in Kailua. IN4Mation Releases New Collaboration With Stussy

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Hawaii-based clothing company In4mation released a new collaboration with Stussy last week featuring four products - a cruiser skateboard, two T-shirts, a hat and pins. "Looking back on this particular project, it was kind of a dream to work on to be honest," says Keith Kanagusuku, In4mation's creative director. "We all grew up really into the product and the lifestyle that Stussy was putting out into the skate and surf scene, so to be able to collaborate with a brand that you looked up to so much when you were younger is really special." As for the products in the collection, each marries key elements of each brand. "If you look at the S-Links tee, you can really see how we worked both of our aesthetics into the piece," notes Kanagusuku. "You have our iconic cross-bones design married next to Stussy's famous S-Links design. I think the rest of the products, from the cruiser deck to the other tees and hats, all really reflect iconic elements of both brands. And to me, when you can achieve that, you know that it's a successful collaboration." For Ryan Arakaki, one of the founders of In4mation, the project speaks to the skate roots of both brands. "For the World Tour tee, we looked to some of Hawaii's most notorious and famous skate spots like A'ala and Zones, and prominently listed them on the tee," he explains. "If you're not in tune with Hawaii's history with skating, the different spots won't resonate with you, but if you have roots in skating in Hawaii, you'll instantly get it ... and that's what we want." The collaboration was released in a limited supply and is available at the In4mation store in Pearlridge and at Human Imagination in Chinatown (1150 Nuuanu Ave.). For more information, visit In4mants.com or call 488-0411.

Reyn Spooner Designs Shirt For Merrie Monarch Fesitval

Reyn Spooner has teamed with Big Island artist Eddy Y to design the 50th anniversary aloha shirt for the 2013 Merrie Monarch Festival. The limited-edition shirt celebrates the rich tradition of hula and pays homage to Hawaii Island, home of the renowned hula competition.

The aloha shirt, the first one ever designed for the festival, is available exclusively at Reyn Spooner retail stores and online at reynspooner.com.

Founded in 1963, the Merrie Monarch Festival honors the legacy of King David Kalakaua, who inspired the perpetuation of Hawaiian traditions, language and the arts. The weeklong festival, taking place March 31 through April 6, features an internationally acclaimed hula competition, craft fair, art show, hula shows and a grand parade through Hilo town.

“It is quite an honor to design an aloha shirt for the Merrie Monarch Festival. That it’s for the festival’s 50th anniversary makes it all the more exciting for us,” says Reyn Spooner CEO Kirk Hubbard III. “Our inspiration for the shirt came from a quote by the Merrie Monarch himself, King David Kalakaua: ‘Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.’”

The aloha shirt features imagery from all the festival’s dance competitions, the eruption of Kilauea volcano, and the iconic scene of Mauna Kea from the festival. A variety of Hawaiian musical instruments along with portraits of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani further add to the illustrative narrative. Made from the company’s trademark Spooner Kloth, the shirt is part of Reyn Spooner’s Classic Collection and retails for $94.

Hawaiian clothing design companies KiniZamora and Waru have merged to create KiRu Manufacturers which designs and produces all of the garments for KiniZamora and Waru locally, in addition to its own house line of couture clothes for men and women.

The designers will introduce their military-inspired fall 2013 collections at a fashion show Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at Aloha Tower. There also will be a special finale featuring couture designs from the “Japanesian” collection, a collaboration between both designers.

KiniZamora, which was founded in 2005 by Kiniokahokuloa Zamora, is a ready-to-wear line designed with a “Park Avenue princess” girl in mind. His design esthetic is a combination of hard-edge lines with a feminine twist. Zamora, 29, graduated in fashion technology from Honolulu Community College and attended The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. His designs are available at Fierce 365 in Kalihi, Sera’s Surf N Shore at Ala Moana and online at kinizamora.com.

Waru, which comes from the Japanese word warubozu meaning “mischievous,” was created by 28-year-old Dean Satta. Born and raised on Kauai and now residing in Honolulu, Satta finds inspiration from his Japanese heritage fused with his local upbringing. The collection started with Hawaiian-inspired animation prints on T-shirts but has since evolved to a full ready-to-wear men’s collection, including shorts, denim, button-ups, sweaters and shirts.

Tickets to the fashion show cost $10 and are available at kirumanufacturers.com. For details, call 295-0838.
