After years of working in retail while creating her own jewelry on the side, Olivia Turner decided it was time to open her own store, so she and boyfriend Branden Chun opened Tasi Boutique in Waialua on the North Shore earlier this summer.

Located at 67-292 Goodale Ave. (Unit 105), Turner describes the store as a modern-day, mom-and-pop, ’round the corner in the country boutique featuring many locally made products and designs.

Turner, who was raised on Guam. “People can find seashell jewelry, pareos, bikinis and beachy dresses.”

Brands available include Khush Clothing, Kealopiko, Lani Lau, Mamalani, Cameron Hawaii, Sunrise Shells Hawaii, Tee’s by Taryn Shimizu and many more. Hawaii Fashion Week

With New York Fashion Week coming to a close last Thursday, island fashionistas still have Hawaii Fashion Week to look forward to. Taking place Sept. 20 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at LUX at Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk, this annual event features a fashion show and performances by local artists. Singer/songwriter Anuhea has been selected as the Face of Hawaii Fashion Week 2013, and on the runway will be fashions from GORG by Liana Green Wright, Tiare Teiti, Kini Zamora, Waru, Missing Polynesia, 88 Tees and Tali’s Polynesia. There also will be performances by Duncan Kamakana, Aidan James, Miss Polynesia and Mr. Polynesia.

“I wanted to give the local design community a chance to be seen by a bigger audience,” says founder/executive director Ralph Malani, a fashion stylist who also owns a Polynesian model and talent agency and started the Mr. and Miss Polynesia Pacific Pageant. “The only thing that sets us apart from other island resorts around the world is our host culture, and I try to showcase that aspect of design because it makes us unique. Many local designers don’t have the resources to put on a big show and hire a publicist, so we give them those tools to succeed.

“People who come will see stylish, fresh, unique new designs with a touch of island that keeps it special. You always will know you’re in Hawaii at any of my events, and the pride I have for the place I love most on earth is the reason I work so hard to celebrate it.”

Tickets can be purchased at HawaiiFashionWeek.EventBrite.com. For more information, call 398-4944.

Meet designer Lynn Sakutori (pictured at right) and shop her newest a-line collection at Macy’s Ala Moana (third floor, Island Attitudes department) Nov. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. At this special event, customers also will receive a free clutch with any a-line purchase of $100 or more.

Sakutori, who earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, started sewing when she was just 12 years old. At the time, her family had moved from Oahu to Maui, and her parents encouraged her to take up a hobby to help ease the transition. So she enrolled in 4-H and took sewing classes. “My dad got me my first sewing machine and I never stopped making clothes ever since,” she says.

In 2000, Sakutori moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion and worked for Kenneth Cole, Nine West and The Limited. Then, in 2007, she moved back to Hawaii and established Sakutori Designs, eventually creating her own clothing lines, including Sakutori at Nordstrom Ala Moana and a-line at Macy’s.

With a personal style of simple, basic pieces that are well crafted, stylish and practical for day, weekends and traveling, Sakutori says finding those great-quality pieces that fit well and at a reasonable price was difficult. So she developed her own fabric.

“A-line features a knit fabric that is made to last and stands up incredibly well to wash and wear,” she explains. “The weight of the fabric also drapes nicely, and the pieces are multi-functional – easy to dress up or down.

“A-line is based on the simplicity of the shape of an ‘a-line’ silhouette. It features clean lines, simple shapes and are great investment pieces – perfect for Hawaii and travel since the fabric is easy to pack.”

Currently, the a-line collection consists of maxi dresses, short dresses, maxi skirts, tops, leggings and tank tops in solid colors and stripes. Sakutori says she plans to introduce prints next year. A-line is available only at Macy’s on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island and Kauai. For more information, visit Sakutori Designs’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/a-line/627404890644412?hc_location=stream.

Jen Kunishima Sarsuelo of Tidepool Love Jewelry has had a love for creating jewelry since she was just 5 years old. She grew up in the jewelry business with her family all helping with her mom’s jewelry company Manoa Designs. Sarsuelo, who attended Punahou School, University of California-Berkeley and University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law, eventually became a licensed attorney in Hawaii and an entrepreneur. She owns 10 retail stores, including several locations of Native Books & Beautiful Things (now Na Mea Hawaii), Hawaii Doggie Bakery & Gift Shop and Cottage by the Sea, and most recently Tidepool Love Jewelry, which she started five years ago.

Her jewelry line has become a favorite for locals, tourists and even Hollywood. According to Sarsuelo, TV show Revenge picked up her entire line for its third season, as well as Hart of Dixie with Rachel Bilson and White Collar with Tiffani Thiessen. Her Pineapple Country ring also will be featured in People StyleWatch, and her keiki/mama jewelry has been seen nationally in Fit Pregnancy and Pregnancy & Newborn magazines.

Sarsuelo’s jewelry line is inspired from time spent at her family’s North Shore beach home and with her young children. She carves in jewelers wax and enjoys casting ocean-inspired pieces in precious metals, such as sterling silver and 14kt gold.

“Tidepool Love only uses precious metals, exquisite Tahitian pearls, top-quality semi-precious and precious stones, and, of course, shells from Hawaii, including the coveted sunrise shell,” says Sarsuelo, noting that her promise to never skimp on quality or materials is a gesture of respect to her family of jewelers.

Tidepool Love Jewelry is available at Cottage by the Sea, as well as in more than 30 stores throughout Hawaii and the U.S., including Sand People and Maui Clothing Co. Also, just in time for Christmas, the public is invited to Tidepool Love’s friends & family trunk show Dec. 6 at Cottage by the Sea in Ward Warehouse from 5 to 8 p.m. Enjoy 25 percent off the entire line, and $500 worth of jewelry will be given away during the event. Also, Sand People in Waikiki will be having a two-week Tidepool Love trunk show starting Dec. 4.

Friends Jasmine Slovak and Kerrie Inouye recently have launched Salt + Sand, a styling service brought directly to the customer in-home, online and through pop-up shops.

“Rather than create a typical retail experience, we wanted a more personalized shopping experience that much of modern retail is losing,” they noted. “We want to leverage all the technology we have at our fingertips to make an accessible styling experience.”

They offer contemporary and classic designs from local designers, as well as from L.A. and New York. All items are personally chosen by Slovak and Inouye, with versatility, quality and functionality always kept in mind. Among the brands they carry are Matt Bruening, B.D’Angelo, Katrina Cordova, The Lady & The Sailor, David Lerner and Stateside.

Slovak and Inouye, who both have worked in the fashion industry for many years, became fast friends over a mutual fanaticism of a Marc Jacobs bag and mutual interest in a runway show called Fashion Trance. When they were just 18, they both worked as buyers for a small boutique in Honolulu called Koko Cabana before Jasmine went on to study abroad in Paris and work the fashion loop in San Francisco, while Inouye became a mother of two sons (6-year-old Hayzen and 2-year-old Madden) and worked for local designer Fighting Eel.

“Salt + Sand was a name that was pulled from what inspired us the most about starting a business together,” says Inouye. “We’re long-time friends, and between our shared view of the importance of our relationships with our clients and with one another, we wanted Salt + Sand to be a company that celebrates the woman and her tribe. Women are the salt of the earth, and it takes their sand and courage to make a good life for all of those around them.”

Check out Salt + Sand at R&D (691 Auahi St.) Dec. 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and at A Pinch of Salt Warehouse (683 Auahi St.) Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also will be featured at Honolulu Night Market’s fashion show Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. in Kakaako.

Salt + Sand is available by appointment only and in-home shopping events. For more information, visit salt-sand.com or call 722-9387.

One of the best things about the holidays is gathering with family. Here, we catch up with some familiar faces and meet their grandparent, while learning about their favorite things. There’s a saying that grandparents are there for you when everyone else is busy.

It’s true, they often are the ones we call on when we need someone to watch our children, especially on short notice. They also are the ones who spoil our kids, especially when we’re not looking. Through good times and bad, they are always there. Wishing you and your families a merry and blessed Christmas, and a special wish to all grandparents for all that you do!

Chris and Debbie Faildo

MW-Style-010114-Fitness NewYear-NW1-NEW

IFBB pro bodybuilder and certified personal trainer Chris Faildo hasn’t competed since 2007, but says his goal for 2014 is to get back on the stage. A former Mr. USA, he and wife Debbie recently became the exclusive Hawaii distributor of X2X Hawaii, a clothing line specializing in workout/training gear. They’re pictured here wearing tops (and shorts on Chris) from X2X, which represents “from one X-treme workout 2 the next X-treme workout.” Debbie, owner of Abs’solute Results, is a fitness champion and has a black belt in kajukenbo. She has retired from competing, and now trains many of the girls entering fitness competitions. The couple also have two children – 16-year-old Phoenix and 4-year-old Flexx.

CHRIS FAILDO

Favorite workout gear: X2X, and Nike shoes in general, but when he’s training, he wears shoes by Otomix. He mostly shops online at sites such as X2X.com and hotbodz.com, and occasionally goes to Sports Authority.

What he wears outside of the gym: “I’m a jeans, Louis Vuitton loafer with a nice dress shirt kind-of-guy,” he says. “I don’t like wearing any cutoff shirts. I don’t like tank tops. I don’t like anything to reveal the body. In the gym, I’m covered up in hoodies and sweat-pants – that’s my style.” Favorite stores/brands: Lucky Brand jeans, Louis Vuitton and Le Lotus Bleu for clothes by Affliction.

Favorite workout accessory: “My Cardillo lifting belt. That’s all I use – my lifting belt and my towel.”

Health tip: “Definitely for beginners, go slow and easy at the beginning, and search out a good trainer.”

Favorite exercise: “Everything. I just simply love working out. It’s my time to get crazy. If you walk in that gym when I’m training, you’re gonna know I’m in there. I’m loud, and for one hour, it’s intense and insane.”

A common mistake you see in the gym: “Incorrect form and going too heavy. So cutting back on poundages, making sure you have the correct form and breathing.

DEBBIE FAILDO

Favorite workout gear: X2X and the X2X Hawaii line (available through the Faildos at their office located in World Gym), which she says is super comfortable and affordable. She also shops online at various sites that pop up by typing in a search for Brazilian workout wear.

What she wears outside of the gym: Jeans, heels, a nice shirt and her Louis Vuitton bag.

Favorite stores/brands: Bebe, Guess, Macy’s and Louis Vuitton.

Favorite workout accessory: “I’ve been into kickboxing, so my boxing gloves.”

Health tip: “Just get moving, get exercising and eat clean – stay away from fast foods, processed foods, sugar, high fats, regular sodas and juices. Eat things that are more natural and lower in fat.”

A common mistake you see in the gym: “People going way too heavy and half reps. Cut down the weight and do the form right – that’s the key.”

Gilad Janklowicz

MW-Style-010114-Fitness NewYear-NW3

Gilad Janklowicz was born and raised in Israel and moved to Hawaii in 1981. He lives in Waikiki, and recently finished filming the 30th anniversary shows of his fitness programs Bodies in Motion and Total Body Sculpt with Gilad, which are airing now on Discovery Fit & Health daily.

Favorite workout clothes (pictured here): “It’s from an activewear company out of Europe called Falke. I wear it for my TV show. It has a very contoured look – hugging the body without being overly exposed. The pants are by MPG.”

Favorite brand of shoes: “I like to wear Puma for my workouts. They hug my feet really well. They’re light and they don’t have too much heel, so I can move in it.”

What he wears when he’s not working out: “Jeans (his favorite pair is by True Religion) and a button-down shirt. No slippers, I don’t wear slippers. Usually I wear shoes (but not sneakers). My sunglasses are Maui Jim, and I wear my Tag Heur watch every day.”

Health tip: “Fitness is a relationship between you and your body, so you have to take care of it. For longevity, the best two things you can do are healthy eating and exercising well.” Favorite food: “Olive Tree Café in Kahala. Usually I order fish souvlaki. They have really good hummus and tabouli salad.” Common mistake you see people do when they workout: “Correct form. In the long run, that can be a problem. People try to push and reach those incredible goals, and they just go for it without paying attention to their form or their abilities, and they push sometimes too hard. So, to me, it’s better to do fewer reps, fewer miles, but be in total control of your posture than to push to the point where you can no longer control your posture.”

New year’s resolution: “To wake up earlier in the morning and come out here to Ala Moana Beach Park and look at the beautiful rainbows (such as on the day the above photo was taken). Unlike what everybody thinks, that if you’re into fitness you’re up at 6 o’clock in the morning and you’re out there running in the mountains, I’m not a morning person at all. So my New Year’s resolution is to get up earlier in the morning and enjoy this beautiful morning breeze in Hawaii and check out the rainbows.”

For me, function is most important, and they’ve got nice dark colors. “Sometimes, when we teach class after class, we don’t have a chance to change shirts, so this one dries quick and it has that Silverescent (which, according to lululemon, helps inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria in the garment).”

Favorite places to shop for training gear: lululemon for clothes, and online for equipment. For gis, he uses Howard Combat Kimonos.

What he wears when he’s not training: “Maybe jeans and a lululemon T-shirt. Or I’m in my O’Neil surf shorts – and always slippers, Quiksilver rubber slippers.”

Favorite stores/brands: Macy’s and Nordstrom.

Favorite workout accessory/gadget: “A Gymboss timer. Whenever I teach classes, everything is timed, every movement is timed, rounds are timed. All of my training is interval training, so this thing is the best.”

Health tip: “Try to balance your carbohydrates and protein ratio. That’s what I do for myself. Try to keep it as even as possible, so like a 50/50.” Training tip: “Always try to do a high-intensity interval (HIT) workout. The benefit of that is short-time workout, high after-burn, so that means higher burning of calories throughout the day, and that’s exactly what I do.”

New Year’s resolution: “To get back into a strict schedule of sleep early, wake up early and putting back my (workout) regiment in the morning. I feel like I haven’t been as productive this past year as normal.”

MARCIA INOUE

Favorite workout clothes (pictured here): “It’s from lululemon. I love the tights because they are breathable and you can wear them anywhere. And I like this top because I like to work out in more-fitted tops, so I don’t get caught in loose clothing.”

Favorite places to shop for workout gear: lululemon, Sports Authority and Gap for its GapFit line.

What she wears when she’s not training: “Jeans, tank top and slippers. I love Hudson jeans – they’re the best, and make your butt look good.” Favorite places to shop: Eden in Love, Nordstrom and online. Favorite workout accessory/gadget: “This Vestal watch. It’ll do your training mode, timer, your heart rate, and it has big numbers so you can see it.”

Health tip: “Drink lots of water. A lot of times people interpret dehydration for hunger, and if you are well hydrated, your body functions better and you have more energy.”

Fitness tip: “Because we do those HIT (high-interval training) workouts, people think they have to pace, but if you push yourself to exhaustion, it’s OK to take a break and come back to it. Your body will see bigger gains and rewards.” New Year’s resolution: “To be more focused on being grateful for what I have, and maximizing my work time, so when I’m home with our five kids to be more present with them instead of being on my computer or my phone while I’m trying to be with my children. So trying to separate those two.”

Freaky Tiki Tropical Optical

Freaky Tiki Tropical Optical, a locally-owned and operated sunglass specialty retailer, recently celebrated the opening of two new stores – in the Outrigger Reef Hotel on Kalia Road and a flagship location in Ala Moana Center (ground level near the escalators by Center Stage). The company also has stores in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel and at Waikiki Beach Walk on Lewers Street.

The stores carry a large selection (between 800 to 1,000 styles) of sunglasses from popular brands, including luxury designers, such as Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Dior Homme, Prada, Tiffany & Co., Tom Ford and Gucci, as well as Ray Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim and Spy Optic.

The Ala Moana flagship location has an extended selection, featuring styles from Persol, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Oliver Peoples, Tory Burch, Coach, Carrera, Arnette and IVI.

When shopping for a new pair of sunglasses, the No. 1 thing to look for is comfort, notes Freaky Tiki general manager Ryken Shibasaki. “If they are too tight, the sunglasses may dig into your temples and cause headaches,” he says. “If they are too loose, they may consistently slide down, which can be irritating, or even fall off and possibly break. What you want to look for are styles where the widest part of the sunglass matches up with the widest part of your face.

“Also, No. 2 is style. If you look good, you feel good. There are specific shapes that compliment specific face types, but first and foremost, you should wear what you like and what makes you feel comfortable and confident.”

For those with a round face and softer features, Shibasaki suggests sunglasses that have angular features, such as square or rectangular frames. If you have a square or angular face, or a strong jaw line, he recommends sunglasses that are round or oval with softer edge lines.

As for the latest trends in sunglasses, it’s medium to large cat eye and butterfly shapes for women, as well as earth-toned frame colors and bold colors, specifically aqua and other shades of blue and green for spring. For men, it’s retro chic with simple rectangular frames or similar shapes and styles, such as the Ray Ban Wayfarer.
