The Honolulu Community College Fashion Technology Program presents Juxtapose “Central Park After Dark” Saturday, April 25, at HCC’s Building 5 courtyard. On the runway will be collections by the 10 graduating seniors, along with a prelude of fashions designed by underclassmen. “It’s a wide range of fashions,” says professor Joy Ann Nagaue. “The students chose to call the show Juxtapose because they come from so many different cultures and backgrounds — Mexico, Oregon, Waianae, Kea‘au, Kalihi, Waipahu, Aina Haina, California and military wives — all coming together as one.”

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30. There also will be a photo booth and entertainment by Blank Canvas Dancers. Tickets cost $35 and include heavy pupu. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 845-9203.

Since opening in 2008, CHAI Studio at Ward Warehouse has become one of Hawaii’s premier lifestyle boutiques for the Bohemian spirit. Located at Ward Warehouse (ewa end, near Menchies), the store values sustainability, fair trade and women’s entrepreneurship, as well as prioritizing materials that not only look good, but also are good for the environment and community.

Inside, you’ll find a great selection of affordable and exceptionally made products, including furniture, home décor, bedding, pillows, throws, poufs, custom rugs, glassware, jewelry, clothing, and a body bar to create your signature scent for oil perfumes.

“Everything at CHAI Studio is unique and limited edition,” says owner Amerjit Ghag. “Our focus is to have inspired products made by artisans both local and global. All items are small runs made by hand. We work with small women-owned or family-run businesses, and we focus on cotton, comfort and casual.”

New merchandise arrives regularly, including items from around the world — India, Africa, Morocco, Turkey, Israel and beyond. For sustainable pieces, there are repurposed saris from India made into throws, pillows, jackets, placemats, bags and select upholstered items; salvaged wooden cabinets and doors made into bed frames and tables, and reclaimed wood made into keiki chairs.

Products by local designers include Lauren Roth and BelaBela T-shirts, The Base Project cuffs, Maya Papaya jewelry and dishes, Filthy FarmGirl soaps, Wanderlust jewelry, and Our Palm Tree jewelry.

The store also hosts monthly DIY workshops. In the past, participants have made indigo tiedye scarves, dreamcatchers, block-printing cards and gift wrap, frames from old sari (sarongs), and organizational pinboards from reclaimed materials.
